India and Japan to expand conducive tax regime to encourage ties

India and Japan on Wednesday committed to enhancing bilateral economic cooperation and agreed to work closely to expand a conducive tax administration system and business environment.

image A joint statement said, "Both countries would continue to work intimately to achieve an enabling predictability and transparency in terms of business environment including tax administration which is conducive to India-Japan economic cooperation and superior flow of investment, technology and services between the 2 countries.”

The statement was issued after exhaustive talks between visiting Prime Minister Mr. Manmohan Singh and his Japanese counterpart Mr. Shinzo Abe. The 2 leaders shared the view that business environment improvement is significant in enhancing bilateral investment and trade which would drive development of both countries.

Mr. Singh and Mr. Abe expressed satisfaction over the progress of Japanese assisted projects like Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC), Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) and Chennai-Bengaluru Industrial Corridor and underlined the require for accelerating their implementation. The leaders expressed their expectation to advance cooperation between Ministry of Commerce and Industry of India and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) of Japan in the framework of India's 'National Manufacturing Policy'.

The Indian Prime Minister appreciated the pledge by Mr. Abe for the Campus Development Project of Indian Institute of Technology, Hyderabad (Phase 2) for 17.7 billion yen and the Tamil Nadu Investment Promotion Programme for 13 billion yen.

Expressed satisfaction with the signing of the 1st tranche of the "Main Loan Agreement" for Phase-II of Western DFC totalling about 136 billion yen, India and Japan, the statement said.
