India's leading carmaker, Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) has asked the
government of India to work to exclude the auto sector in the country
from the preview of the proposed Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between
India and European Union (EU).
Rahul Bharti, Head-Corporate Affairs, MSI said, "Keep high value-add products like cars out of EU FTA as they have a huge multiplier effect for economy, employment and capability. Allow Indian SMEs to achieve global economies of scale which will make them globally competitive and give market access only against investment commitment in India."
Indian government officials are holding discussions with the 27-nation EU. The two sides are discussing Broad-based Trade and Investment Agreement since 2007 they have not been able to achieve an agreement due to differences on the issues. The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), which represents the interest of the Indian auto industry, has urged the central government to exclude the industry from the proposed Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the European Union.
SIAM has said that the country is not likely to gain anything from the FTA with the European Union. A SIAM official said that the industry body has written to the country's Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to protest the auto industry's inclusion in the FTA negotiations with the EU authorities. SIAM cited other trade agreements such as that with Japan to state that FTA's have not benefited the country substantially.
