Sensitive items' import rose 42.8% during FY12

India has seen considerable rise in the overall import of sensitive items by 42.8% to Rs 1009.11 billion during FY12 (April-March period) as compared to Rs 706.56 billion in the same period in 2011, according to government data.

The gross import of all commodities rose to Rs 23422.17 billion during fiscal 2011-12 as against Rs 16834.67 billion in the same period of last year. Reports suggest that the import of sensitive items includes 4.2% and 4.3% of the gross imports last year and present year, respectively.

Moreover, the imports of foodgrains have fallen at broad group level in FY12.
The imports of all other items such as edible oil, automobiles, pulses, fruits & vegetables (including nuts), rubber, cotton & silk, products of SSI, spices, milk & milk products, alcoholic beverages, marble & granite and tea & coffee have risen in FY12.

In the edible oil sector, the import has jumped to Rs 463.092 billion as compared to Rs 293.191 billion.
Also, the imports of both crude oil and refined oil have climbed by 53.5% and 85.6%, respectively.

The government data also reveals that the imports of sensitive items from Indonesia, Malaysia, Germany, Argentina, Ukraine, Korea RP, US, Japan, Thailand, Canada, Myanmar, United Kingdom, Australia, Cote D' Ivoire, Vietnam, Guinea Bissau have risen while from Brazil, it has slipped.
