India's imports of sensitive items surged 40.9% year-on -year to Rs
92,574 cr during April -February 2012 with the increase in edible oil by
54.7%, amounting Rs Rs 42,262.72 cr from last years Rs 27,314 cr.
According to reports, imports of fruits and vegetables during the
period rose 75.3% to Rs 8,374 cr, alcoholic beverages and spices also
increased by 55.5% and 53.3% respectively.
Meanwhile, the imports of food grains, auto-mobiles, milk and beverages dropped.
On the back of record food grain production in India for 2011-12, the imports dropped 93% compared to last year.
In India imports sensitive items from Indonesia, China, Malaysia,
Argentina, Germany, Korea, the US, Canada, Japan, the UK, and Australia.
The sensitive items include vegetable, food grains, edible oil, etc
