State stint in Japan trade fair

A high-level delegation from the state today left for Japan to take part in India Show at Tokyo from June 20 to 22, where Jharkhand’s automobile, silk and tourism sectors will be promoted for the first time.
A part of the 16th Mechanical Components & Materials Technology Expo (M-Tech 2012), India Show will be hosted at Tokyo Big Sight. M-Tech, organised by Reed Exhibitions Japan in association with Japan Exhibition Association, is the island nation’s largest exhibition focused on mechanical components, materials and fabrication technologies. Sources in the industry department said that Jharkhand had been allotted space at the 36sqm India pavilion in the fair.

Led by tourism minister Vimla Pradhan, the team also comprises Koderma MLA Annapurna Devi, development commissioner Debashish Gupta, industry secretary A.P. Singh, director (industries) Vandana Dadel and director (tourism) Sidhhartha Tripathy. Two representatives from Ranchi Industrial Area Development Authority and the state’s silk and handicraft corporation, Jharcraft, are also part of the delegation. A few representatives from the state’s automobile industry are also learnt to be attending the fair, but at their own expense.

Speaking to The Telegraph, Jharcraft managing director Dhirendra Kumar said that they had sent samples of stoles, scarves, kimonos made of pure silk and other fabrics to Japan. “We expect good business as we will get to know about the taste of Japanese from feedback from Exim Bank. This fair provides us an opportunity to expand our business there,” said Kumar, adding that Jharcraft manager (marketing) Archana Kongari had been sent to Japan as part of the delegation.

The show will exhibit over 100 Indian companies from engineering, information technology, chemicals, pharmaceuticals and a host of other fields. India is a partner at M-Tech 2012. This year also marks the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries, with the event being seen as a step towards strengthening Indo-Japanese ties.

Jharkhand has taken part in various international expos, including in Germany (Hannover Messe) and Canada in the past couple of years. Recently, the state participated in a fair in Bangalore.

The industry department also claims to have received a number of queries from offshore corporate representatives, many of them NRIs, for business/investment opportunities in Jharkhand. However, no concrete outcome has emerged so far. Only, Jharcraft has been able to do some business in offshore destinations.
