Manesar - Rioting was sparked by a labor dispute and has killed one person and injured many more. Maruti Suzuki has shut one of its two factories due to the damage caused.
Workers smashed and burned many vehicles in a rampage which left one dead and injured dozens of others.
The factory is owned by the top Indian car manufacturer, Maruti Suzuki, and is located in Manesar, in the north Indian state of Haryana.
A company spokesman said today that the plant stopped production on Wednesday night due to the fire damage caused by the rioting workmen.
He stated that no decision has been made on whether to re-open the 550,000 vehicle a year plant. He also stated that at least 40 managers and executives had been hospitalized with injuries during the rampage
K K Sindhu, police commissioner for the Gurgaon district told Bloomberg in a phone interview that 80 workers were arrested.
According to a factory spokesman, the dispute started yesterday morning, when a worker beat up a supervisor on the main floor. Apparently the supervisor abused the worker and made derogatory remarks about his caste (or social class).
Following this, the workers' union stopped management from taking disciplinary action, and actually blocked managers from leaving the factory after work.
After talks to resolve the dispute failed, workers set property on fire, damaged offices and facilities and smashed and burned cars.
The company is a subsidiary of Japan's Suzuki Motor Corporation. Shares of the company and its Japanese parent apparently fell due to the incident.
